Umbra began in Toronto in 1979, when childhood friends Paul Rowan and Les Mandelbaum couldn't find a window shade they wanted to live with — so they designed one. A simple question has guided them ever since: could this be better? Believing everyday objects deserve original design, Umbra creates pieces that organize a room, shape a routine or solve a problem, designed for how people actually live. More than 40 years on, their perspective hasn't changed: original design for every way of living.
